In an attempt to get more finish options for the Cubes, we're trying something new and exciting. Prior to sending these Cubes to the anodizer, they've undergone an extreme hard tumbling process with new, large format media. This media causes large surface abrasions but doesn't damage the material. The Cubes have then been anodized in a different process to our normal cosmetic anodizing, specifically they've been hardcoat anodize. This anodize is often used in military applications where it hardens and protects aluminum by adding an abrasion resistant, porous oxide to the aluminum. For these Cubes we've used what's often called "Natural" Type III anodize which comes out a dark grey with olive and brown tones to it, and Hard Black (Type III) which is a greyish black that a tactile feel to it. The finish is matte and has a more tactile feel to it. The hardcoat anodize finish is also much more durable than our standard anodize process for added protection.
The custom-machined inserts are pressed into the body of the CUBE and have a bore of 9/16” to accommodate most pens. The rubber feet keep the CUBE from sliding around and slightly elevate it from the surface it rests on, giving it the illusion of weightlessness. When, in fact the aluminum CUBE weighs 1 Lb, 14.5 oz, not too heavy to dent your desk, but substantial enough to keep your pens from flying away.
