At 02:51 on July 21st 1969, Neil Armstrong began his decent down the ladder towards the surface of the moon. Years of preparation by NASA scientists, test pilots, and numerous other astronauts culminated in one of the greatest moments ever, as the words “That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." crackled over the radio and down to the millions watching or listening to man’s first steps on the moon. Armstrong spent over 2 hours on the surface of the moon collecting samples and taking observations before returning to the lunar module in preparation to link up with Columbia in lunar orbit. With the successful landing of the lunar module and first men walking on the moon, the Space Race was effectively over; the United States coming out the clear winner by fulfilling the national goal set by President John F. Kennedy in 1961.

It’s been fifty years since that historic mission to the moon, and technology and scientific discovery has changed the world. But we are still in awe of the Apollo 11 mission and the men that were on board the Saturn V rocket that launch on July 16th 1969. Fifty years later, we’re paying homage to that mission with a new product launch and special release commemorating the Apollo 11 mission. We’ve never shied away from our love of all things space themed. A year ago, we released the Reaktor Line that specifically drew elements from the Space Race and how it shaped a nation. For the Apollo 11 commemorative special editions, we’ve curated three separate products all in a matte dark blue anodize with tumbled brass accessories. The colors have been drawn directly from the Apollo 11 mission patch with its dark blue stitching throughout while the brass comes from the outer border stitched in gold thread.

For quite some time we’ve wanted to add more options in terms of desktop pen holders. While the Cube collaboration with Mike Dudek continues to be a great product for us, there’s always been the idea that we could easily add some options to our pen holders category. The Apollo 11 anniversary was the impetus we needed to give us a boost of creativity. We sat down to design a single pen holder that would pull elements from the command and lunar modules used in the Apollo 11 mission. The overall shape of the Command Module pen holder references the overall shape of the Columbia command module that splashed down with the Apollo 11 astronauts. It’s a little bit skinnier, but in general we drew directly from the outline of the actual command module. We’ve then added tumbled brass “legs” that roughly reference the lunar module legs with large round “feet” to keep the Command Module pen holder firmly on your desk. We’ve utilized custom foam inserts to ensure whatever pen you choose to dock in the Command Module is kept ding free and right at hand. We hard tumbled the Command Module and had the same matte blue anodize applied to it. Lastly we’ve custom laser marked the bottom of the Command Module with our Apollo 11 custom logo and 50th Anniversary markings. The Command Module ships in protective bubble wrap and a small box to ensure it doesn’t get damaged before it reaches it’s final destination. This Special Edition release is limited to 100 Command Modules.
