SPECIAL EDITIONAt 02:51 on July 21st 1969, Neil Armstrong began his decent down the ladder towards the surface of the moon. Years of preparation by NASA scientists, test pilots, and numerous other astronauts culminated in one of the greatest moments ever, as the words “That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." crackled over the radio and down to the millions watching or listening to man’s first steps on the moon. Armstrong spent over 2 hours on the surface of the moon collecting samples and taking observations before returning to the lunar module in preparation to link up with Columbia in lunar orbit. With the successful landing of the lunar module and first men walking on the moon, the Space Race was effectively over; the United States coming out the clear winner by fulfilling the national goal set by President John F. Kennedy in 1961.
It’s been fifty years since that historic mission to the moon, and technology and scientific discovery has changed the world. But we are still in awe of the Apollo 11 mission and the men that were on board the Saturn V rocket that launch on July 16th 1969. Fifty years later, we’re paying homage to that mission with a new product launch and special release commemorating the Apollo 11 mission. We’ve never shied away from our love of all things space themed. A year ago, we released the Reaktor Line that specifically drew elements from the Space Race and how it shaped a nation. For the Apollo 11 commemorative special editions, we’ve curated three separate products all in a matte dark blue anodize with tumbled brass accessories. The colors have been drawn directly from the Apollo 11 mission patch with its dark blue stitching throughout while the brass comes from the outer border stitched in gold thread.
The Starliner XL fountain pen was also selected for this release. The pen was hard tumbled before being sent out to the same anodizer for matte dark blue treatment. Another run of brass fountain pen grip sections was made, and those were then tumbled to provide texture and added grip to the smooth brass finish. We used a custom NASA inspired font and marked the clips with “APOLLO 11”. Opposite the clips, we had another custom mark engraved into the surface of the cap, a large 50 in similar font, bisected by a stylized V. The 50 marks the 50th anniversary, while the V represents the Saturn V rocket that successfully took the astronauts on this mission. Included is a specially curated vinyl sticker that plays on the space theme but is done in our style, designed by our designer Gee. The Apollo 11 Starliner XL includes a Bock 076 nib in polished steel in sizes EF, F, M, B, 1.1 or 1.5 (some tip sizes may have low stock quantities and go out of stock during this release). Nib upgrades to titanium or 14k gold are available at an additional charge. The pen ships with a Schmidt K5 converter and two black Monteverde international cartridges. The Apollo 11 Starliner XL ships in a clear plastic telescoping tube to ensure the pen is not damaged.
