Much like we've done with the Bolt, we're changing things up with our production Modal rollerball releases, we're letting YOU choose the grip profile you prefer with the corresponding anodize color. Not only can you choose the original Smooth grip, you'll also have access to this classic colorway in Dragonskin, Fluted, and MK II (Frag). We've never offered those grips in a standard colorway option before, and we may never offer them this way in the future, but for this 2026 Production Modal release, these are the available options. You'll also be able to select from four different refill options. The tried-and-true black Pilot G2 rollerball version is back, along with the black Schmidt easyFLOW 9000 ballpoint refill; but we've added the black Monteverde Gel ballpoint refills in Extra Fine and Fine as options because so many of you asked.
The Prospector Modal Special Release is the first Special Release from the most recent batch of machined Modals,
and the first to feature customizable refill selection and a larger scale release. We wanted this Special Release to be available for longer allowing more people to be able to purchase one of our most sought after colorways. The Prospector colorway features deep blue "bright-dip" anodize paired with polished brass clips and buttons, bringing together the classic look inspired by the Superstition Mountain gold rush days and the surrounding flora, specifically blue sage that's present in the Arizona desert. This release features four grip profile options and four refill options you can customize when checking out. Ships in our recyclable packaging with a custom vinyl sticker.

We offer a comprehensive Lifetime Warranty against manufacturing defects on parts and pieces we manufacture in-house. We also offer a Lifetime Service & Repair option requiring the customer send their item in to us and in most cases we will repair items free of charge. If an item is deemed as being damaged due to negligence, a charge may be applied to repair the item and we will contact the customer in those circumstances. Items not manufactured by us MAY have a limited warranty, please contact us for questions via the contact form.
A New Darkhorse
Our latest addition is our take on the traditional bolt-action pen with a side button and deep-pocket clip. The Modal took over half a decade to bring to fruition with so many iterations along the way, we didn't know if it would ever make it to production. Our initial sketches for this pen go back to 2018, and Josh created a crude prototype in early 2019. Those pens look nothing like the finished product, and it took a lot of thinking outside the box to finally get the version of the Modal you see today. The upper body of this pen is one of the most intricate and time-consuming pieces we've ever designed. The upper body and clip went through six separate engineering changes from launch until the design was finalized in 2025. Externally the pens look nearly identical with the current production models being 1/8" longer than the original. The Modal is on pace to overtake the Bolt for our bestselling pen just a few years into its existence. Currently we're updating standardized versions for late-2026 release as well as planning out a full slate of special and limited releases through early-2027.
Previous Releases
We specialize in producing unique and interesting limited and special release small batch products to ensure we have something for everyone. We partner with an ever-expanding group of artists and professionals to provide versions of our pens that range from hand-engraved to force patinated to hand-painted. Small batches range from 10 to 30 units some will never see a second release.
This is my first Modal, and I am not sure how I feel about it. The fit and finish does not have the same level as the other Karas pens I own. The Modal rattles more than the two Bolts I have, and I think the rattles in Bolts are acceptable. But the Modal’s pen clip is what bothers me the most. I am fine with the machine marks on the brass, but the clip wasn’t aligned properly, and there’s a 1-2mm gap between the clip and the pen body. I am not sure if that’s how it is designed, but it certainly does not look well assembled. I am a little concerned because I have just placed another order for the Olive Green Modal as a gift for my sister who’s serving in the military. If they all come with such a big gap, I don’t think it’ll last a day on her uniform.
I have about 7 other Karas pens, and 4 EK pens, with 2 more EK pens that are still lost in the mail, this is the only one that I am considering returning.
