Special Release of 100 Pens
Bourbon, whether referring to the whiskey or the coffee, does well when it’s served on the rocks. Bourbon coffee is one of the most important varieties in the world due to its use in creating new cultivars. It takes its name from Île Bourbon where it was grown by French Missionaries who brought it from Yemen. Bourbon whiskey is the most recognizable American whiskey, distilled from a mash bill containing at least 51% corn. A common mistake is that bourbon must come from Bourbon County, Kentucky which is not true. Distilled since the 18th century, it didn’t become known as “bourbon” until the mid-1800s. One amazing way to enjoy bourbon on the rocks is to combine both bourbon elements in something like a Cold Brew Bourbon Cocktail, then you have all your bases covered. In any case, enjoy your bourbon (either one) however you prefer, but we like our bourbon on the rocks.
Our latest 2021 Vertex Special Release is a classic material that brings to mind both bourbon coffee and bourbon whiskey on the rocks. The material is manufactured in England in what has long been called Tortoiseshell, this version specifically Dark Tortoiseshell. It’s called this due to its similarity to the traditional tortoise shell inlays, combs, and jewelry. This resin is a granite-style or chip-style material that combines different brown, amber, and yellow chips of material combined into one solid machinable rod. We’ve taken the material, precision machined it, then sanded it, and hand-polished it to a bright luster. The finished product looks amazing with lighter gold areas of semi-transparency, moving to darker ambers, and several shades of brown. The colors and the fact that this was a granite-style resin immediately brought to mind bourbon on the rocks, and we let our sense of humor show a little bit with this particular release. We’ve sourced a unique graphic from Karas Collaborator Ishmael, that’s been laser-etched on the machined box lids and also touches on the granite or rock theme of this release. When customizing your purchase you’ll be prompted to select from four different grip options, one of these is brand new for this release: Brown Translucent (NEW), Coke Bottle, Orange Transparent, and Smoke Transparent.
The Vertex is our second release in our Signature Series which is built around using plastics and other resins as the main parts of the pen. From the beginning, we wanted to create something that looked, felt, and functioned differently than other pens on the market. The Vertex’s basic design is that of a classic eyedropper pocket fountain pen. It functions with only four parts: a cap, barrel, grip, and nib. Simply add ink to the reservoir, and you can happily write pages of notes before you need to refill. Eyedropper pens can be tricky and messy, and we wanted to eliminate some of those concerns. During the engineering phase, we implemented designs of custom-fit o-rings to eliminate the need for silicone grease to seal the grip and nib areas. We wanted a smooth transition from grip to barrel, so we moved traditional breakpoint from the section back, and using a third o-ring in the cap adapted slip cap functionality for the pen. The longer grip section allows for the use of an “ink window” with transparent materials which adds a little flair to the pen. The Vertex looks and feels streamlined and aerodynamic with soft tapers, a cigar-shaped body, and a concave cap top; the Vertex is at once futuristic and reminiscent of the classic lines of Parker and Sheaffer pens. The Vertex is the latest step in our Design.History.Technology influenced Signature Series.
Comes standard with a Bock polished steel nib, with upgrades in titanium and 14k gold when in stock. The #6 nibs units are manufactured by Peter Bock in Germany. Also included with each pen is a Schmidt K5 converter, a 2 ml soft pipette and 2 black Monteverde ink cartridges. Each pen is designed and machined, by us, in the USA.
