Introducing our official 2022 Small Batch series over halfway through the year might be a little strange, but we were waiting for the perfect resins. Thankfully, Zoe has created some absolutely wonderful resins that are perfect for our Small Batch series. Similar to our Pen Show Cityscape Small Batches, we’ve decided to do a few holiday Small Batches. These will feature colors that bring to mind elements of the specific holiday, and Ishmael will be creating special Small Batch lids for each of these. The first of these holiday Small Batch Vertexes is the HWLZ-3VE 001 and 002. Two spooky-themed colorways, 001 is an exclusive Pen Club release, while 002 is straight to the website.
The HWLZ-3VE 002 Small Batch Vertex is handcrafted in our shop in Mesa, Arizona, from the material to the machining to the finishing and packaging; this is us pushing ourselves to continue to make more of the processes in-house to keep costs down while ensuring the quality remains to standard. For this release, Zoe utilized dyes with mica for chatoyance, specifically blending green with varying amounts of white and purple woven through the green; she also added silver, green, and purple mica through the green and purple while leaving the white as an opaque color. These are more classic Halloween colors; the green signifying evil and especially the gross gravewalking zombie and reanimated dead monsters, more purple for the spooky spellcasters, and white for the ghosts, ghouls, and mummies. The colors are poured in different ratios to give a huge spectrum of color variance and allow for a wide variety in this release. No two pens will even closely resemble another, they run the spectrum from dark green with nearly no white and ribbons of purple to light green and white and swathes of purple. When you check out select from three different grip sections options: Coke Bottle transparent, Purple transparent, and Smoke translucent. You’ll also have the option to select from various steel nibs, with titanium upgrades available. Ships in our machined Vertex box with lasered HWLZ-3VE 002 Small Batch lid.
The Vertex is our second release in our Signature Series which is built around using plastics and other resins as the main parts of the pen. From the beginning, we wanted to create something that looked, felt and functioned differently than other pens on the market. The Vertex’s basic design is that of a classic eyedropper pocket fountain pen. It functions with only four parts: a cap, barrel, grip, and nib. Simply add ink to the reservoir, and you can happily write pages of notes before you need to refill. Eyedropper pens can be tricky and messy, and we wanted to eliminate some of those concerns. During the engineering phase, we implemented designs of custom-fit o-rings to eliminate the need for silicone grease to seal the grip and nib areas. We wanted a smooth transition from grip to barrel, so we moved traditional breakpoint from the section back, and using a third o-ring in the cap adapted slip cap functionality for the pen. The longer grip section allows for the use of an “ink window” with transparent materials which adds a little flair to the pen. The Vertex looks and feels streamlined and aerodynamic with soft tapers, a cigar-shaped body, and a concave cap top; the Vertex is at once futuristic and reminiscent of the classic lines of Parker and Sheaffer pens. Comes standard with a Bock polished steel nib, with upgrades in titanium and 14k gold when in stock. The #6 nibs units are manufactured by Peter Bock in Germany. Also included with each pen is a 2 ml soft pipette and 2 black Monteverde ink cartridges. Each pen is designed and machined, by us, in the USA.
