Introducing our official 2022 Small Batch series over halfway through the year might be a little strange, but we were waiting for the perfect resins. Thankfully, Zoe has created some absolutely wonderful resins that are perfect for our Small Batch series. We’re doing a special Small Batch release JUST for Fountain Pen Day 2022. Curated with an eye for a colorway that we’ve not explored before, and utilizing a “stamp-like” Fountain Pen Day artpiece on the lid, this release is a Limited Edition piece available in a very short run.
The KPC-FPD-2022 Small Batch Vertex is handcrafted in our shop in Mesa, Arizona. From the material to the machining to the finishing and packaging; this is us pushing ourselves to continue to bring more of the processes in-house to keep costs down while ensuring the quality remains up to our standard. For this release, Zoe utilized dyes only trying to accentuate the colors without adding mica. These dyes are new to Zoe, and during the process she combined them in a order she hasn’t used before. The base is equal parts tan and white that she then swirled orange through, the last step was swirling in a light green and light blue. The orange and white bleed together just a bit in some areas and the green and blue often meet to make a lovely teal. The finished piece brings to mind the Arizona landscape with it’s tan desert and the cresting sunrise with orange, blue, green, and then the white of the sun. When you check out select from four different grip sections options: Brown transparent, Coke Bottle transparent, Dark Green transparent, and Teal translucent. You’ll also have the option to select from various steel nibs, with titanium upgrades available. Ships in our machined Vertex box with lasered KPC-FPD-2022 Small Batch lid, created by Ishmael Salleh.
The Vertex is our second release in our Signature Series which is built around using plastics and other resins as the main parts of the pen. From the beginning, we wanted to create something that looked, felt and functioned differently than other pens on the market. The Vertex’s basic design is that of a classic eyedropper pocket fountain pen. It functions with only four parts: a cap, barrel, grip, and nib. Simply add ink to the reservoir, and you can happily write pages of notes before you need to refill. Eyedropper pens can be tricky and messy, and we wanted to eliminate some of those concerns. During the engineering phase, we implemented designs of custom-fit o-rings to eliminate the need for silicone grease to seal the grip and nib areas. We wanted a smooth transition from grip to barrel, so we moved traditional breakpoint from the section back, and using a third o-ring in the cap adapted slip cap functionality for the pen. The longer grip section allows for the use of an “ink window” with transparent materials which adds a little flair to the pen. The Vertex looks and feels streamlined and aerodynamic with soft tapers, a cigar-shaped body, and a concave cap top; the Vertex is at once futuristic and reminiscent of the classic lines of Parker and Sheaffer pens. Comes standard with a Bock polished steel nib, with upgrades in titanium and 14k gold when in stock. The #6 nibs units are manufactured by Peter Bock in Germany. Also included with each pen is a 2 ml soft pipette and 2 black Monteverde ink cartridges. Each pen is designed and machined, by us, in the USA.
