In keeping with our experimentation with different grip profiles for some of our pens, we’ve had great success with the Fluted Bolt V2, but we wanted to add something similar to rings but with a bit more purchase. The speed-groove is our latest grip profile that we’re testing out on the Bolt V2. What’s a “speed-groove” you ask? Initially, we thought to apply the grooved lower barrel treatment that we use in the EDK, but when we tested out a few they didn’t look right. Instead, we’ve opted to change the “dished” groove into a flat-bottomed wide groove. We weren’t feeling just the wider groove, so we increased the feed rate, which changes the speed at which the part machines and touched the bottom of the groove leaving nice micro-rings in each groove. Hence the term “speed-groove”. This treatment is similar to the Render K grips that have this same textured micro-rings and adds a nice grip to the anodized aluminum.
Another new adventure in terms of trying out new things arrives with the Matte Olive Speed-Groove Bolt V2. We recently sourced stamped 6061 aluminum clips for our upcoming line of mechanical pencils, and we figured we could try these clips with our Bolt V2 pens. This allows us to anodize all of the aluminum parts the same color. For this release, we’ve tumbled the upper and lower bodies, knobs, and clips together then sent them out for matte olive anodize. The finish is awesome, when assembled the full matte olive looks stellar. The new speed-groove profile feels great in the hand and the finish doesn’t detract from the feel of the pen in the hand. We’ve used black screws for the fasteners just to keep the colors muted. This is the first finish for our new Speed-Groove Bolt V2, and we’re happy to see that they came out as nice as they did. The pen ships with a black Pilot G2 refill.
