Skaði (anglicized as Skadi) is a jotunn and goddess associated with skiing and winter among other things. She’s written about it in both the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda as well as other major writings. The daughter of the giant Thiazi, Skadi is a giantess herself, however, due to her prowess as a huntress and warrior plus her marriage to the sea-god Njord she was accepted by the gods of Asgard. In looking at our latest material, we knew we’d want to find something chilly or winter-esque to draw upon for this release and Skadi seemed to fit for a variety of reasons.
The Skadi Vertex Special Release is fully-machined from beautiful UK produced resin that we’ve sourced from Turner’s Workshop. The material is a “granite” or chip resin made up of predominantly two materials. The materials are a light green with some lovely shimmer and a dark blue that also have some lovely chatoyance to it; the combination brings to mind the chill wind off the waters off the north while it blows over snow-dusted trees and meadows. The finished pens brought to mind that chill just in looking at them, the feeling of the winters and the northern lights on the blue-black sky, it just felt right that we’d draw from Norse mythology. We landed on Skadi specifically because the first thing that came to mind when we thought about the material was “frost giants” and she’s the perfect example of that while also being an attested figure in numerous works throughout history. To us, this pen is the perfect fit for Skadi. When you select your Skadi, you’ll be prompted to choose from three grip section options: Blue Transparent, Light Green (Coke Bottle) Transparent, Mint Translucent, or Smoke Transparent. The ever-capable Ishmael Salleh has created some custom artwork once again featuring some amazing Norse-themed images and styles to convey the idea we were going for. The lids look amazing with his artwork lasered into them.
The Vertex is our second release in our Signature Series which is built around using plastics and other resins as the main parts of the pen. From the beginning, we wanted to create something that looked, felt, and functioned differently than other pens on the market. The Vertex’s basic design is that of a classic eyedropper pocket fountain pen. It functions with only four parts: a cap, barrel, grip, and nib. Simply add ink to the reservoir, and you can happily write pages of notes before you need to refill. Eyedropper pens can be tricky and messy, and we wanted to eliminate some of those concerns. During the engineering phase, we implemented designs of custom-fit o-rings to eliminate the need for silicone grease to seal the grip and nib areas. We wanted a smooth transition from grip to barrel, so we moved traditional breakpoint from the section back, and using a third o-ring in the cap adapted slip cap functionality for the pen. The longer grip section allows for the use of an “ink window” with transparent materials which adds a little flair to the pen. The Vertex looks and feels streamlined and aerodynamic with soft tapers, a cigar-shaped body, and a concave cap top; the Vertex is at once futuristic and reminiscent of the classic lines of Parker and Sheaffer pens. The Vertex is the latest step in our Design.History.Technology influenced Signature Series.
Comes standard with a Bock polished steel nib, with upgrades in titanium and 14k gold when in stock. The #6 nibs units are manufactured by Peter Bock in Germany. Also included with each pen is a 2 ml soft pipette and 2 black Monteverde ink cartridges. Each pen is designed and machined, by us, in the USA.
