In keeping with our experimentation with different grip profiles for some of our pens, we’ve had great success with the Fluted Bolt V2, but we wanted to add something similar to rings but with a bit more purchase. The speed-groove is our latest grip profile that we’re testing out on the Bolt V2. What’s a “speed-groove” you ask? Initially, we thought to apply the grooved lower barrel treatment that we use in the EDK, but when we tested out a few they didn’t look right. Instead, we’ve opted to change the “dished” groove into a flat-bottomed wide groove. We weren’t feeling just the wider groove, so we increased the feed rate, which changes the speed at which the part machines and touched the bottom of the groove leaving nice micro-rings in each groove. Hence the term “speed-groove”. This treatment is similar to the Render K grips that have this same textured micro-rings and adds a nice grip to the anodized aluminum.
We returned to a finish that hasn’t been used in several years, but this time we did a little upgrade. By partnering with a local Cerakote applicator, we’ve sourced some truly unique Speed-Groove Bolts. These Speed-Groove Bolt V2 pens were professionally coated with Cerakote Stormtrooper White H-297* with a Mil thickness of 2-3. This is a brilliant high gloss white with a the highest rated hardness for ceramic coatings. The Cerakote was applied uniformly to the upper and lower barrels of the pen, while the knob was anodized black and the clip and screws are our standard black stainless steel. The new speed grooves on the lower barrel feel great with this finish and provide a comfortable grip without causing any hand fatigue. The pen ships with a black Pilot G2 refill.

*Cerakote is a temperature-cured, spray-on ceramic coating that is used in a variety of industries including automotive, defense, outdoors, and sports. While Cerakote has been tested and rated at the highest levels of hardness, corrosion resistance, flexibility, and heat; it is not nearly as durable as anodize. Like all coatings, Cerakote can and will naturally wear when carried against objects of a similar or greater hardness than the Cerakote. Cerakote can chip or crack if dropped onto hard surfaces. Be advised this surface finish will wear over time, and is not as resistant to wear or damage as our standard anodize.
The Bolt V2 is made from 6061-T aluminum on our CNC lathes and Swiss machining centers, in Mesa, Arizona. Pilot G2 refills are manufactured by Pilot Pens in Japan.
