Small Batch 2021-005
In the waning months of 2020, we set out to see if we could bring more of our processes in-house in order to expand our inventory, specifically with the Vertex fountain pens. We researched resin manufacturing, purchased some equipment and supplies, and spent a few months testing different processes. Fast forward to late spring 2021, our polishing and sanding technician expanded her role and began making several batches of resin with different types of dyes, micas, and other pigment agents. These were manufactured in batches as small as two pieces of resin and as “large” as eight pieces of resin. Over the last 45 days, we’ve machined, sanded and polished these small batches; and we are now ready to release the first of these Vertex Small Batch releases.
Small Batch 2021-005 features handmade resin in a white base color with swirls of pink and bronze throughout. We’ve added bronze and pink mica to the material during the process to add a shimmer that can be seen in all of the layers. Treated and machined in-house after our technician finished making this material, this is the first Karas release featuring material made in-house. Each pen was finish sanded, hand-polished, inspected, and assembled by our team of technicians. Small Batch 2021-005 features a transparent smoke grip section that pairs nicely with the material. Vertex Small Batch releases will ship with a medium nib, K5 Converter, and two Monteverde black ink cartridges.
The Vertex is our second release in our Signature Series which is built around using plastics and other resins as the main parts of the pen. From the beginning, we wanted to create something that looked, felt, and functioned differently than other pens on the market. The Vertex’s basic design is that of a classic eyedropper pocket fountain pen. It functions with only four parts: a cap, barrel, grip, and nib. Simply add ink to the reservoir, and you can happily write pages of notes before you need to refill. Eyedropper pens can be tricky and messy, and we wanted to eliminate some of those concerns. During the engineering phase, we implemented designs of custom-fit o-rings to eliminate the need for silicone grease to seal the grip and nib areas. We wanted a smooth transition from grip to barrel, so we moved traditional breakpoint from the section back, and using a third o-ring in the cap adapted slip cap functionality for the pen. The longer grip section allows for the use of an “ink window” with transparent materials which adds a little flair to the pen. The Vertex looks and feels streamlined and aerodynamic with soft tapers, a cigar-shaped body, and a concave cap top; the Vertex is at once futuristic and reminiscent of the classic lines of Parker and Sheaffer pens. The Vertex is the latest step in our Design.History.Technology influenced Signature Series.
Ships with a medium Bock polished steel nib which are manufactured by Peter Bock in Germany. Also included with each pen is a 2 ml soft pipette and 2 black Monteverde ink cartridges. Each pen is designed, manufactured, and machined in Mesa, Arizona.
