XIII Anniversary Vertex Limited Edition

It’s been 13 years since Bill Karas set out on his own and opened Karas Kustoms. Over the years Karas Kustoms has evolved from a contract machine shop to slowly adapting a retail business side to what we are today, largely a business-to-consumer, retail machine shop. We design, prototype, develop, and manufacture multiple types of writing instruments and accessories; with a desire to make as much of each product in-house or as close to our shop as possible. Thirteen years along and we’re continuing to try new things while at the same time improve our standard designs to ensure all of our products meet our standards and the high standards of our customers.

The XIII Anniversary Vertex is another step in the direction of keeping our manufacturing in-house while at the same time trying new things. This summer, our Product Finishing Technician, Zoe, began a journey to teach herself how to mix and cast Alumalite. We released a few of her creations via the first two Small Batch releases. The XIII Anniversary Vertex is her first large-scale creation and release. Partnering with Bill Karas to create something truly unique for this year’s anniversary release was a massive undertaking. Numerous test batches were created before they landed on the correct mix of colors, mica, and other additions. The final product combines resin and metal in a stunning example of our move to continue to innovate. A dark black base was chosen along with a mica-filled, red transparent layer and a clear layer. Zoe then titanium swarf from an upcoming release of our first titanium pen throughout the material. She mixed the colors and titanium swarf, making each piece completely unique. We then completed finish machining on the pens, turning them into the XIII Anniversary Vertex pens. The sanding and polishing process is a bit different on these pens, as they have some surface peculiaraties. There are raised and recessed areas from the titanium, though these do not compromise the material. The black was specifically added so that it would give a dark background, absent of a brilliant shine allowing the titanium to come through more, while the ribbons of red and clear then enhance the shine with the added mica. The titanium serves to add our third color; grey to this pen; completing our XIII Anniversary releases with a similar Vertex release. Our Vertex artist, Ishmael, went above and beyond creating an amazing graphic that covers the entire top of the Vertex box lid. Ships with a specially machined smoke grip section as these pens were machined just a bit undersized, a K5 Converter, and two black Monteverde cartridges. Customization with polished steel, titanium, and 14k gold nibs is available before checkout.

The Vertex is our second release in our Signature Series which is built around using plastics and other resins as the main parts of the pen. From the beginning, we wanted to create something that looked, felt, and functioned differently than other pens on the market. The Vertex’s basic design is that of a classic eyedropper pocket fountain pen. It functions with only four parts: a cap, barrel, grip, and nib. Simply add ink to the reservoir, and you can happily write pages of notes before you need to refill. Eyedropper pens can be tricky and messy, and we wanted to eliminate some of those concerns. During the engineering phase, we implemented designs of custom fit o-rings to eliminate the need for silicone grease to seal the grip and nib areas. We wanted a smooth transition from grip to barrel, so we moved traditional breakpoint from the section back, and using a third o-ring in the cap adapted slip cap functionality for the pen. The longer grip section allows for the use of an “ink window” with transparent materials which adds a little flair to the pen. The Vertex looks and feels streamlined and aerodynamic with soft tapers, a cigar-shaped body, and a concave cap top; the Vertex is at once futuristic and reminiscent of the classic lines of Parker and Sheaffer pens. The Vertex is the latest step in our Design.History.Technology influenced Signature Series.

Comes standard with a Bock polished steel nib, with upgrades in titanium and 14k gold when in stock. The #6 nibs units are manufactured by Peter Bock in Germany. Also included with each pen is a 2 ml soft pipette and 2 black Monteverde ink cartridges. Each pen is designed and machined, by us, in the USA.
