New Pocket Pen

The RKiV field pen takes the best aspects of the EDK and Retrakt combining them into a pen that looks fresh and is as durable as anything else we've released to date. That's not all, the RKiV is built around the only made in USA ballpoint refill, designed to write anyhwere, the Fisher Space Pen® refill. We've sourced black PR4 refills from Fisher for the default refill for this pen release.

The Survival Red RKiV field pen is our first standard release for the RKiV field pen. While this version may go out of stock from time to time, we'll release batches of it whenever necessary, with the idea that this colorway is a standard offering. Survival Red references the use of red as a popular option with outdoors and survival companies, some of which are so well known for their red products, the color has become synonymous with the brand. We've offered red pens, even red and black releases in the past, but never as a standard release, until now. The RKiV field pen is the perfect canvas for this colorway. The sleek design looks incredible with a matte red anodize finish on the heavily tumbled aluminum pen body. The micro-ring texture is just visible and adds a touch of texture when gripping the pen. The matte black hardware with black chrome mechanism pulls the whole thing together.

The RKiV field pen is another step forward in our journey to make pens that are made to go anywhere and write everywhere. The RKiV is a small-format, click-style pen similar to the EDK but with a new look and design that allows us to shorten the manufacturing time, reduce product lost due to anodize issues, and is based around a ballpoint refill we've never featured before. The vision for this pen was to create something that wasn't a direct riff on one of our existing pens. The EDK used a combination of the Retrakt upper body and a shortened Bolt grip. The Modal uses a Bolt grip and the Pocket Modal uses an EDK grip. For the RKiV we took smaller elements (tip taper, micro-rings, etc) and built from that aspect for a single-piece pen designed to use a standard oil-based ballpoint refill. Our internal tests have proven the RKiV is a beast of a pen in a pint-sized package, and with the Fisher Space Pen® refill, it WILL write in any condition.

The RKiV field pen is our latest addition taking inspiration from both the Retrakt and EDK but moving our brand in a new direction. The initial idea behind the EDK was an everyday carry pocket pen; something with a small "footprint" that didn't make any sacrifices in terms of how it wrote or felt in the hand. We missed the mark by building it around the Schmidt P8126 refill with a push-button mechanism. This created a lot of ink stained pockets and empty refills. After a few years, we added the Schmidt 950M pressurized refill to fix this problem which provided a solution but an imperfect one. The RKiV field pen has been designed from the ground up around the Fisher Space Pen®refill, the gold-standard for pressurized, everyday carry ballpoint pen refills. This means the RKiV can still utilize our smooth push-button mechanism without worrying about the ink wicking away into the fabric of your pockets. A go-anywhere, write-anywhere pen perfect for any situation. Need to take notes while on safari? The RKiV has you covered. The pen is great quality and a reasonable price I would definitely buy from them in the future.

Always quick service. I have a nice collection of Karas pens. All of them get used. The RKiV is the perfect size and weight and you can't go wrong with a Fisher refill. I would highly recommend it, whether you sit at a desk or are in the field.

I actually have the burnt orange cerakote version of the RKiV but since I cannot find that listing on the site, I thought I'd leave a review on the form and function of the RKiV here. First, in terms of the general form, the RKiV is a 4 out 5. The slightly wider grip area works well and the overall length is great for quick writer you expect for ballpoint-based pens. It terms of overall form, there are two issues that consistently come up with KK's shorter type pens, the click mechanism and clip. Both work well to be sure. I do find the knock can too easily deploy when keeping the pen in a front pocket, but give the ballpoint refill, wicking and other actions that could release ink are not really concern. However, both the knock and the clip tend to overwhelm the overall look, and in the case of the clip, slightly affect the use of the pen. The length of the clip takes up the top 50% of the pen body and so you really need to negotiate around it for the pen to fit into the webbing between your finger and thumb. To be clear, this is not a big problem, but it can detract from the efficient deployment of the pen. One last point, the pen can take the Fisher Space Pen refill, but only because the Fisher refill comes with that additional plastic thingy that turns it, somewhat, into a Parker style refill and that can create an issue. The Fisher refill that came with my RKiV actually protrudes slightly from the nose of the pen when the knock is retracted. Due variances in production of th refill, this can happen with the Fisher refills and the plastic thingy for any pen that take Parker style refills. When swapped out for another Fisher refill I have, there is not protruding of the refill from the nose of the RKiV. Overall, a solid entry into the KK family of pens, but not one without design choices you need to accept/enjoy as your tastes prefer.
