After nearly 10 years of requests, we’ve finally gotten around to “officially” working with titanium on a pen. Over the course of the last three years, we’ve invested time and money into our machines, programs, and tools to set ourselves up for success on this journey. In 2019, we realized expanding our pens to include bronze and titanium was something that would happen sooner or later, and we immediately began taking steps to make that happen. During our 2020 planning meetings, we sketched out a path to releasing the Bolt V2 in titanium, but with all of the other problems we encountered that year we were unable to see those goals realized. But we kept those plans on the books and came back to them in our 2021 planning meeting. Throughout this past summer, Josh spent hours prototyping and working on programming to get our two CNC Swiss lathes ready for the task, and once our titanium arrived he got down to business. Despite running into multiple speed bumps in the first few weeks, he was able to get the first batch of titanium pens finished just before Thanksgiving, and when we returned to work the following Monday we began inspecting, tumbling, and assembling the pens. The final product is everything we’d hoped it would be in terms of look, feel, and function; it meets and exceeds all of our expectations and we’re proud to bring the Tumbled Titanium Bolt V2 to market.
The Tumbled Titanium Bolt V2 is machined from barstock, grade 5 (6Al 4V) titanium that is custom-ground to our specifications. The knobs, upper body, and lower body are all machined on our CNC Swiss lathes with upgraded tooling and programming. Final machining on the upper bodies for the clip slot and threads is then completed on our CNC mills. All of the parts have then been tumbled in a liquid and ceramic media for a minimum of 6 hours to give a unified look and “soft” but tactile feel to the body of the pen. Using a custom setup we then smooth the inside of the upper barrel and j-slot creating a free-moving and smooth action for the actuation of the refill. We’ve used our tumbled stainless steel clip and screws for this release. When checking out, you’ll be prompted to select your refill type.
