New Decograph Release

Polyetherimide (PEI), trade name Ultem, is an amorphous, amber-to-transparent thermoplastic with characteristics similar to the related plastic PEEK. Relative to PEEK, PEI is cheaper, but is lower in impact strength and usable temperature. Because of its adhesive properties and chemical stability it became a popular bed material for FFF 3D printers. Ultem is a family of PEI products manufactured by SABIC as a result of acquiring the General Electric Plastics Division in 2007, developed by Joseph G. Wirth in the early 1980s. Ultem resins are used in medical and chemical instrumentation due to their heat resistance, solvent resistance, and flame resistance. – source Wikipedia. We’ve been machining pens from industrial thermoplastics for quite some time. In fact, the first pen we released via Kickstarter had a very small run of Delrin (Polyoxymethylene) pens made for some very early backers. When we designed the Decograph, we went out of our way to make a list of non-traditional thermoplastics we might. Delrin was our initial non-metal material of choice, though we soon expanded to traditional thermoplastics but didn’t end up expanding to other industrial thermoplastics. Ultem is now fully on the table since we’ve released the Vertex, Modal, and Pocket Modal in this material, we realized it was high time we added the Decograph to the list.

The Ultem Decograph is currently a special release pen fully machined from natural polyetherimide (Ultem). Natural Ultem is a nearly transparent amber (more on the yellow-amber side). Ultem is a “hard” plastic closer in composition to polycarbonate whereas Delrin is a “softer” plastic that has self-lubricating properties and somewhat of tackiness to its surface. Our Ultem Decograph is machined from solid PEI rod stock; bodies, caps, and grips. We’ve utilized several new machining techniques and custom tooling during the machining process to better ensure the transparency of the material is on display while minimizing tool marks. For this release, we’ve implemented a few new steps and modified some existing steps to the finishing process. The finished parts are hand sanded in a triple-step process, and then transferred to a tumbler with ceramic media that polishes the surface. This provides a semi-polished surface but does not cause the pens to be slippery like traditional polishing provides. When purchasing you will be prompted to select a nib option. Ships with a Schmidt K5 converter, two Monteverde black cartridges, and a custom vinyl sticker.

This Ultem Decograph uses Bock Nibs with our standard laser-marking in a variety of sizes in polished steel and titanium. If you are looking for the NEW Jowo nib compatible Ultem Decograph, CLICK HERE.

The Decograph is our take on a traditionally styled, full-size fountain pen. Machined from solid thermoplastic and 6061 aluminum, the Decograph is our lightest pen yet. Weighing .72 ounces (20.4 grams), the Decograph is perfect for everyday carry and use. The clip on the Decograph is a single piece of milled aluminum or brass, with anodize aluminum options and a copper-plated brass version. The #6 nibs units are manufactured by Peter Bock in Germany. Also included with each pen is a Schmidt K5 cartridge converter and 2 black Monteverde ink cartridges. Each pen is designed and machined, by us, here in the USA. The Decograph is the first pen released in our Design.History.Technology influenced Signature Series.

The Ultem Decograph is designed and manufactured in Mesa, Arizona. Bock nibs are manufactured in Germany. Black Monteverde ink cartridges are manufactured in Austria. Schmidt K5 Converters are manufactured in Germany.
